                                                  ABOUT ME                                                    FREEMEN OF ALNWICK

LADY DOROTHY FORSTER                SIR JOHN FORSTER

FERDINANDO FORSTER. MP.               MY FAMILY TREE

The Forster's must be regarded as one of the great families of the county of Northumberland. They were awarded numerous knighthoods and at least one baronetcy and are entitled to take their place alongside any other notable family in the county. To many of these they were related by marriage.

In their earlier day's they were very prolific. One Forster had 23 children and others too had many-both legitimate and illegitimate-and anything in the nature of a complete family tree is quite impossible. The family did in fact spread over the whole of Northumberland and beyond: to Durham, to the West Country, to Essex, to London, to North America, to Jamaica and to Australia.

From early records the family first became established as a dynasty at Adderstone, in the parish of Bamburgh and some 4 miles from Bamburgh itself. Here they are known to have lived for 12 generations.Adderstone (variously known as Herdiston, Ederston, Eddrestone, Etherston, Etherstan and Etherstone) was their paternal home.

The branch of the family which lived in Bamburgh derived from Sir John Forster in the 1500's but there was so much intermarriage with the Forster's of Adderstone that it is reasonable to regard the two families as one. Be that as it may, it was the Bamburgh Forster's who became rich and powerful and whose decline in the eighteenth century was all the more remarkable for it.

So here is my story, it is a story of great deeds and battles spread over the centuries. As I progress my research I will update this site, but for now I will put in what family tree I have managed to trace.

LATEST NEWS.

BY DNA TRACING I'M PRETTY SURE I AM DESCENDED FROM ANOTHER SIR JOHN FORSTER,WHO FOUGHT ALONG SIDE KING RICHARD 1ST THE LIONHEART IN THE THIRD CRUSADE IN 1190AD. During the Third Crusade [1189 - 1193] At the siege of Acre, A. D. 1191, a party of Saracens surrounded King Richard, he would have been overpowered and made prisoner had not Sir John Forster, who seeing from a distance the danger in which the King was placed, pushed forward with couched lance followed by his retainers shouting, "To the rescue! A Forester! A Forester!." The Knight who for his bravery and timely assistance received from King Richard a grant to bear a Chevron Vert on his shield. He was knighted and made Governor of Bamburgh Castle. He was also later one of the knights who compelled King John to sign the Magna Carta at Runymede in 1215.
